Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies: A Gatlinburg Visit Plan

Plan Ripley’s Aquarium in Gatlinburg: Shark Lagoon, Penguin Playhouse, Touch-A-Ray Bay, ticket choices and the glass-bottom boat add-on.

At Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies, the strongest first-visit stops are Shark Lagoon's underwater glidepath, the African penguins at Penguin Playhouse and the close-up ray viewing at Touch-A-Ray Bay. Build your Gatlinburg outing around those three, then add the smaller galleries that catch your attention. The mix gives families more variety than a continuous walk past tanks.

The essential planning details

  • Where: 88 River Road in Gatlinburg; see our Gatlinburg parking and trolley guide for where to park downtown.
  • Ticket decision: aquarium-only admission or a combination that includes other Ripley's attractions.
  • Check for your date: current hours, admission terms and any separately booked experience.
  • Group approach: agree on a few things to notice, then let people spend time at the displays that interest them.

Use Ripley's official aquarium page and official ticket options. A combination ticket can be useful if you already want its other attractions; it is less useful if it turns a relaxed aquarium outing into several obligations.

Three exhibits to build the visit around

Shark Lagoon: the underwater view

The Shark Lagoon glidepath moves visitors past sharks, sawfish and green sea turtles. Look above as well as beside you: the viewing angle is the experience. This is the obvious anchor for anyone whose first question is whether they will see sharks.

Penguin Playhouse: watch the swimmers

Penguin Playhouse houses African penguins in an indoor/outdoor habitat with viewing tunnels. Watch how differently the birds move on land and in the water. Families whose children enjoy small viewing passages may want to allow extra time here.

Touch-A-Ray Bay: a closer look

At Touch-A-Ray Bay, rays glide through a shallow tropical lagoon. Follow the staff's instructions for any permitted contact; observing the animals is worthwhile even if you prefer not to touch. It makes a different kind of stop after the enclosed underwater view at Shark Lagoon.

A flexible Gatlinburg half-day

  1. Choose the ticket before leaving. Check the admission conditions and save confirmation details where you can retrieve them.
  2. Settle parking and arrival first. Use the operator's current visit information and your map app; do not rely on an old quoted parking price.
  3. Start with one shared circuit. Let the group get oriented before anyone spends extra time at a favorite display.
  4. Pause before adding another attraction. Ask whether people want more activities, a meal or a return to the house.

The daily schedule is the place to check feedings and presentations. Use a confirmed presentation time to order your stops; a general exhibit ticket does not promise every event will run during your visit.

Rain, access and comfort

An indoor attraction can help on a wet day, but the journey from parking still happens outside. Bring a compact rain layer and consider where wet coats and umbrellas will go. If anyone has sensory or mobility requirements, check with Ripley's about the specific assistance or facilities needed before the visit.

The aquarium images are visitor photographs from earlier years. They show the destination and marine-life photography, not a guarantee that a particular animal, exhibit arrangement or scheduled encounter is available today.

Is the aquarium in Pigeon Forge?

No. This guide covers Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies at 88 River Road in Gatlinburg. Check the attraction name when comparing combination tickets.

Is the glass-bottom boat included with aquarium admission?

No. Ripley's describes the Glass Bottom Boat Adventure as an add-on; aquarium admission is also required. Check its availability and participation rules before planning around it.

Pair the aquarium with another Gatlinburg outing

For mountain views, compare SkyPark and the SkyBridge with Ober Gatlinburg's tram outing or Anakeesta.

What should we save for a clear day?

Use our Sugarlands guide for a short national-park introduction. Keeping indoor and outdoor options on different days gives your stay more flexibility.
